Actually, I believe that great subs, properly integrated with any speaker at any price, no matter how fabulous the bass is claimed to be, can enhance the overall listening experience.
Mainly because it almost never happens that the best locations of the mains - for presence, tone, and soundstaging - will be the same location to reproduce the bottom octave linearly.
IME, that usually means crossing over at - or below - 30 Hz or so.
Even so, it's not about better bass, for the most part.
It's about retrieval of space. Increased presence and palpability of voices and instruments. And increased dynamics for some recordings. All of which contribute to a more compelling musical experience.
But I'd rather have no subs than one great one, since one will cancel random phase information especially in acoustic recordings.
IMO, it's how & why an acoustic instrument can sound and feel as if it is literally in the room.
