Another vote for either IB (optimal) or nice sealed subs. If you go the DIY route, passive radtiator or Isobarik designs are worth looking at as well. Personally I am enamored of IB and Isobarik.
IB have a lot of advantages, the Cult has plenty of information.
But first, play with placement, make sure you have enough amp power, and slight eEQ is not out of the question as well. Amp power is cheap these days with the proliferation of monstrously powerful pro amps.
My music tasts range from orchestral to jazz to trance.
The MMG setup has a nice home-built 4x12" isobaric sub: 2 external drivers, 2 internal drivers, powered by 500w plate amp, crossed over 12db/octave around 50hz. The MMG's are in a moderate sized room, the combo fills the room very nicely. The Isobaric can keep up with the MMG's in speed and precision.
The 1.7 setup has 4x18" FiCaraudio IB subs in the attic. The room is much larger and box subs were not cutting it. Crossover is 80hz 12db/octave.
Note IB subs rely entirely on the driver suspension for cone control. Thus, Qts should be around 0.7 for smooth extended bass. Another poster mentioned IB subs do not use the pressurization of the box for the return stroke, this is correct. However the total Q of a IB vs. sealed system should be close to equal.
