RE: Just how much better are Maggie 1.7's

Opinions will vary, here’s mine. My opinion is based on extensive listening to friend’s 1.6, and my 1.7. I owned MMG’s for 10yrs and bought 1.7 a few months ago.

1.7 vs 1.6: “window” into the sound seems about the same size, maybe slightly larger. Resolution is better, more low-level detail comes through. Speakers seems faster and more detailed. I always thought the stock 1.6 tweeter/mid balance was off: highs sound over-emphasized, almost painful, even with resistors in place. I never did enjoy listening to them – to me they sound bigger than the MMG but not as well ‘integrated’ or smooth.

The stock configuration on the 1.7 is slightly bright, acceptable in a moderately ‘dead’ room. The main thing on the 1.7 is that it really does ‘get out of the way’ and let the music come through. You cannot tell it is a 2 or 2.5 way system: the midrange doesn’t shout, the tweeter is not shrill, the lovely Maggie bass caresses you. It does not draw attention to itself. You forget you’re listening to speakers, and focus on the music instead. For me this is always the mark of a really good system. The MMG’s pull this off very well in smaller rooms. I always found the 1.6’s had a ‘listen to me!’ quality in the treble/upper mid, and the midrange was somehow lacking.

As mentioned I’ve owned MMG for a decade, and was never tempted to get a set of the 1.6’s. The move to the 1.7 was precipitated by moving to a bigger house, the MMGs sounded small in the new room. Luckily the 1.7 came out shortly afterwards and sound very good.

Now, I have never heard a modded 1.6 and based on experiences on this forum, would expect good things. "If I were you", I'd be very tempted to pick up a set of used, maybe lightly modded 1.6s (there are a LOT for sale now) for 1/2 the price of the 1.7, and see how you like it. Right now there are lots of mods available for the 1.6, not so much on the 1.7.

FYI I listen to a lot of small jazz groups, vocals, etc. I find it very easy to distinguish speakers with good top-to-bottom integration and good midrange/treble balance and clarity with such relatively simple music, the ears know what it’s supposed to sound like.
