RE: Now wondering what rivals the sonic character of planars

I’m addicted the Maggie sound, but have found other speaker types involving:
1)Near-field small monitors. Pretty much the polar opposite of Planars: itty bitty instead of big, near point source instead of line source, monopole instead of dipole. But a nice neutral set of mini monitors can give a very nice soundstage and listening experience. I have a set of NHT Super Zeros, available used for $150 or so, very nice.

2)Line source dynamic speakers – OB or closed box. OB can give a very Maggy-ish presentation, ‘room-filling’ sound. It should, since all those drivers should perform like one big elongated driver. Closed box locks in the image and decreases room interactions of course. Closed box line source dynamic speakers are great solutions for big sound in rooms unfriendly to dipoles.

Horns: I’ve heard a few but never enjoyed them. They just sound honky and horny :) to me. It’s subjective though, my dad (who also owns Maggies) loves big horns.
