RE: Could I reverse my investment and still be happy?

I hear you - and I may be in a very small minority, especially on this forum. As Josh says very well (and I tend to agree): "even the best speakers mangle the signal a lot worse than amplifiers do". Agree 100% there is no fixed formula, though I do tend to encourage those new to the hobby that the classic 50/50 split (speakers/front end) is a good starting point.

I think we can agree that at the end of the day, it's about the subjective end-user's enjoyment; what sounds good and feels like a good 'investment in happiness' to the purchaser. I smile and nod as my neigbors show off the new big-box brand name system - They love it, thus it's good for them. If they wish an opinion from the known audio nut in the neighborhood (me) I'll be happy to provide, but I'm usually reluctant to offer opinions to aquantainces for fear of sounding critical or depreciative.
