RE: Could I reverse my investment and still be happy?

I may be in the minority that believes electronics are such a commodity that it is relatively easy and cheap to procure mass-produced, mid-market electronics which the human ear will not be able to differentiate from the boutique, expensive items. I think the majority of ABX testing bears this out, however that's a can’o worms of it’s own….

For instance, a $10k front end will not make much difference to a $75 set of Polks. But Maggie 1.7’s sound pretty dam’ good hooked up to a 50wpc receiver and cd player, total frontend of $150. I know cause I’ve tried ;) The $10k front end will only make it sound better. I do believe the speaker is truly the limiting factor in *most* instances.

In the case of speakers vs. electronics, the decision has to be holistic. What kind of sound do you like? Some like planar, some like horns, some like boxes. Each comes with it’s inherent advantages and drawbacks.

In the case of planars (Maggies included) my list of limitations are 1) modest efficiency 2) lack of deep bass. As long as these are recognized and accepted or accounted for in the rest of the system components, the overall result will be very pleasing to the purchaser.

“If I had $10k to spend” (on new stuff only), the system would look like:
-Maggie 3.7 (without a doubt)
-High-end pro or modest home amp for the Maggies (Crown, Emotiva etc, $1k)
-Emotiva, Epik, Rythmic or IB sub ($1-2k)
-Midline receiver to handle the preamp and all other duties ($500-1k)
And there’s still a couple $k leftover for other goodies. Such a system would hit the highs, hit the lows, go loud, go soft, and leave only those with a need for fancy nameplates wanting.

Personally my system is similar to the above in breakdown, though with a total system cost of more like $5k
-1.7’s (2k)
-Pro-amp ($500)
-Receiver ($500)
-Infinite baffle sub ($1200)
-Sony PS3 as digital media servier ($500)

If you already have $8k in front end, it will likely serve you well whatever direction you choose to go. Enjoy the music!
