I have heard tell the a500 had issues with the volume knobs - at anything less than 100% up, they had severe distortion. Big enough issue there is evidence of it on youtube. I've read in amp user's manual the preferred method of using a power amp is to set the amp gain to 100%, use the pre-amp or source to control volume. This can help protect the preamp from being overdrive, and can improve the overal s/n ratio.
