MMG's to 1.7's

I've had MMG's for 10yrs and really enjoyed them. Just took delivery of the 1.7's a couple weeks back, still breaking them in. The 1.7s do indeed sound better - a bigger 'window' into the sound and I keep noticing things on the 1.7 I'd not heard before. Then I go back to the MMG's, and it's there, but I have to listen for it, just a bit less precise and clear.

So for fun, I'm doing the Razor mods on the MMG's, and looking to replace or mod the x-over. At minimum, replace the stock components with 'better', and possibly try the cap-less tweeter design.

The Razor mod made a small, just noticeble change in overall sound quality. Not sure it was worth the $25 in materials and hours of labor.

Thus far I've only replaced the caps with Dayton 1% tolerance caps, and the tweeter sound immediatly changed: slightly brighter, slightly more defined, like a thin veil was removed. AND (this is what I was looking for, and why I went with the Dayton caps specifically!) the 2 speakers now are better matched - the right channel had always sounded a bit brighter than the left. I'd always put it down to imagination, my own ears, or room acoustics. Now the treble seems identical. INTERESTING for a $15 mod!

I've been a Magnepan fan for 15yrs and owner for 10, but just getting my feet wet in tweaking and modifying. Thanks to this board and the trailblazers before me!
