Maybe what you were hearing with the Alpha Core'd speakers was the result of the woofer's crossover point being slightly lowered? Dropping the resistance of the circuit (Alpha-Core v/s stock) while keeping the same inductor value would do this.
When I installed a MG-12 spec crossover in my MMG's (highly recommended BTW) I used an Erse Super Q inductor. Because of the lower resistance I used a 2.2mH instead one rated at 2.8mH like the original one. I should have changed the cap value too but before I got around to it I Gunned 'em.
Anywhoo, If you try an Erse or a Sledgehammer in there, I suggest you go with a 1.8mH one to keep the crossover point close to the original.
