Think in terms of maximum power transfer. Ohm's Law does not tell the whole story. Most transformer coupled amps have output transformers that are optimized for 8 ohm loads. If you have a nominal 4 ohm speaker, the sonics will not be as good on the 4 ohm tap. Think of the physics of using half the secondary windings and a very high impedance ratio. A good autoformer will allow you to use your 4 ohm speakers on the optimized 8 ohm tap.
