As an EE, I have to believe that any faults I can hear should also be measurable with proper equipment (note that this doesn't imply that a component that measures good must sound good - more likely the right measurements weren't made to detect the faults).I agree that the ear is very sensitive to certain distortions, hence my comment awhile ago about the ear detecting distortion products 40dB to 60dB down from the fundamental that would be invisible on an oscilloscope. They would be detectable on a spectrum analyzer though.
So both Davey and I have measured fuses and confirmed that they are nonlinear due to heating. I consider the DC measurements crude; a more sophisticated way to do this would be to use a pulsed measurement at low duty cycle (to heat up the fuse just short of the point at which it blows) and an oscilloscope to measure the fuse's voltage increase during the pulse. This might better explain the fuse's audibility.
