Yes, the beating was audible on headphones. I was surprised the midrange was affected; I had expected the problems to be in the treble. Unfortunately I couldn't detect any anomalies on my oscilloscope. I have an old tube scope that has just enough 60Hz hum to render fine measurements impossible, and even with a good scope, the ear can detect components 40-60dB down from the fundamental that would be invisible on a scope. Oh well. If I were doing this for a living rather than as a hobby I could get more conclusive results.
