Generally, I'd absorb when you are that close. Comb-filtering is not your friend.

Even diffusion won't help much with quickly arriving rear reflections, which will smear the sound.

Plus, depending on the thickness of the absorption, you may get some help in the bass.

While absorption may reduce your sound levels slightly, at least they'll be more listenable levels!
