A resistor in series with a dynamic driver will definitely make a difference...in the bass, mainly.
A resistor in series with a Magnepan may make a difference. I'd guess it will make a difference.
but I can't say how much.
The idea is to simulate the effect of a tube amp which has a very low damping factor due to transformer windings. SS amps typically have very low resistance when 'on' = hi DF.
