Even with the same tweeter separation, the real difference is the difference in path lengths from mid to treble sections. This introduces an uneven response through the crossover region. This difference is very audible and it's very measurable. In some ways it is analogous to having the wrong vertical tilt on a Vandersteen.
The only way to make that aspect the same is to introduce a substantial change in toe-in with one set-up, which will again change the sound.
Therefore, a direct comparison is a bit more complicated, even if you make certain that the treble panels are the same distance apart.
Of course there will still be preferences for one or the other, but I thought I'd mention these variables as well.
