When I went vertical with them it seemed to smooth out the bass response. I had a slight imbalance left to right. It was likely because of the back wave interaction with my small, asymmetrical room. Also, the image did move up in the sound stage as you experienced. A much better presentation all round. Makes prefect sense if you think about how these speakers radiate sound waves.
