Sorry, I don't think I was clear enough.Except for physical appearance, there is nothing about the original T-1U that was similar to or competitive with a T-IC, and certainly not with a T-1D. And for that matter, not at all competitive with today's 1.6 or 1.7.
By comparison, the T-IU was dull, lifeless, lacking bass authority, etc.
It simply did not compare in these areas: bass, mid, treble, dynamics, effortlessness, transparency, imaging, presence, etc.
The T-1U still had some areas of interest when compared to the 1A, very little compared to the 1B, miniscule when compared to the 1C, and nothing in any area compared to the 1D.
I had direct experience working with (selling and installing) the various models in the evolution of this series, and - IMO, in retrospect - the T-1U was little more than an experimental prototype to prove the idea could work. Of course, we certainly didn't think of it like that back then!
Thankfully, Jim's insights and design skills continued to flourish and grow exponentially from that first offering.
Best regards,
Jim Smith
