ARC was the original distributor of the T-1D. I wrote the T-1D manual in 1976, while at ARC.
Up to that time, all ARC electronics had been vacuum tube. Previous Tympanis were 8 ohm, a nice match for the ARC tube amps.
The T-1D was introduced to coincide generally with the intro of ARC's Analog Module ss amps. The 4-ohm impedance was to take advantage of higher current delivery with these amps.
The change-over in distribution occurred in 1977, a simple business decision. By that time I was at Magnepan.
So the T-1D officially became a Magnepan product, sold exclusively by a few (not all) authorized Magnepan dealers. ARC Tympani dealers were terminated. Some reapplied to be Tympani dealers through the Magnepan distribution chain.
Hope that helps to illustrate the time-line for the transition.
Best regards,
Jim Smith
