In my experience with them...

I worked with the original Tympanis when they came out. I think it was even earlier than 1973, but I might be wrong.

All newer Maggies (MG series or Tympanis) would be more lively and extended, at least on top.

A 15x15 room with two 4' wide speakers would be tough, as far as extracting their potential. For one thing, the square shape will introduce room geometry issues below 300 Hz. I'd probably have to run them in the room at a 45 degree angle (ameliorates some standing wave problems in the bass) if I hoped to get more than 50% of their capability.

With a "normal" set-up (on the square axis) it'd be very difficult to get them far enough into the room, and still sit back far enough to focus all three of the panels and get the sound to coalesce, notwithstanding the bass unevenness from the room shape.

Not saying you might not like it in many ways, but it would prevent them from doing their best.

And their best was primarily the midrange. The highs weren't particularly extended or alive sounding. The bass got much better in later Tympanis.

Said all of that to get to this summary - get the 1.7s.

Best regards,

Jim Smith
