Having visited hundreds - if not thousands - of audiophiles who owned "high-end" systems, in nearly every case I could've properly installed a mid-fi system and it would have been vastly better than the owner's existing high-end system.
Of course, proper installation and voicing of a higher performance system should and could be even better. Sadly, it rarely occurs, IME.
