RE: MG3.6, Bryston 4Bs, need preamp and CD advice!

I have used tubes and SS with the 3.6. I have used the 550K Musical fidelity boosters and they do have a signature despite the claims...they sound like SS, what can I say. The Bryston 4BST was very lean in the midbass and bass. I will retry that with my Marchand XM44 Xover and see if the results are the same. The 3B is too underpowered. The maggies need at least 250wpc-300wpc to come alive with hard driving Jazz, and that is still marginal. Ideally, 4 7BST would do if you like SS only. Or, you could get a 400wpc MAC SS, use the passive Xover and forget about all the other things like active xovers etc. I have not heard the Mac, but it is said to sound good. I tried the Spectron 600wpc, and the Nu force, and the ears bled. The 3.6 needs gobs of power if you want to make the bass kick like it is supposed to. I like the James 1500 for the bass, or the JL audio 113's which are very fast and tight. The James a little fuller and slightly slower, but still fast.
If you use tubes on top, have at least 120wpc if crossed over at 250 and above or it will clip badly. The bass needs at least 250wpc, preferably 500wpc to get into the high 90dbs in large rooms. Get a tube preamp like the EAR which is full and dimensional so the SS amps are not so dry. I use a highly modified Quicksilver which is great. Also, the linestage quicksilver is superb for the money. Hope this helps, Jallen
