Quad ESL 63 - function of "FS2"

In the later 63's Quad added what I believe is a Varistor, "LFMR 250" in series with the speaker input and the audio step-up transformers. It looks really "chintzy" for whatever job it's supposed to do. Anyone enlighten me to its function and if it can be removed?
