RE: See.....

I have posted my amplification before, but will again in the event you missed the post. Last night I and the phile group compared the Bryston 4BST, Spectron 500wpc amp TAS loved so much with my trusty Quicksilver 90wpc heavily modded monoblocks, and the results were surprising. First 2 weeks ago, I used 4 monoblocks of the Quickies and a Marchand XM26 tube electronic Xover and things were better in some ways, worse in others. I heard the electronics (XM26) and did not like the loss in transparency. A bit more dynamic, but a bit more opaque. I will try an XM44 in about 2 weeks. Three of us are buying and getting a good deal. I went back to the passive Xover and liked the return of transparency.
Last night was with passive Xover for the reasons listed.
First up was the Spectron. A big sound, reasonably transparent, quick, but a glare in the upper mids and female vocals were a bit splashy and had hot spots through the range. Sounded very SS for all the wrong reasons. Bass was big, but very generic and thin. Next up the Bryston, a legend in the 4BST, and this too was thin, a bit smaller sounding than the Spectron, perhaps the 7BST would have been a better comparison, but they are almost the same with regard to tonal balance, I opted for the 4BST. This was a bit warmer, but not as transparent, and still too thin. I could not last too long with either amp. Out they both went and back were the Quickies. I was disappointed with both driving the panels. They would do better with other speakers perhaps. I have heard the 4BST do well in other situations so I think it is still good, just not in my situation. I should try a Rowland again as they are unfailing musical for SS. The improvement with the tubes was very big. The ARC amps should be similar and sound splendid. I will next V-cap the Quickies perhaps tomorrow and re-evaluate them with the 3.6's..........
