First, a solder pot is great, but the stench from one means you need to use it outside, or in a garage with the door open like I do.
Do not forget the flux!! I am using Kester 2% silver lead free bar solder. You do not want to breathe the fumes from lead in a solder pot. My solder pot was about $80, I've since seen it for $40 or so, sorry I forget where, but check out MCM and Parts Express.
Cardas solder is allegedly better according to my mentor, but I have n personal experience to offer.
Having said that, the easier way to solder the Cardas wire is with a hot soldering iron from a solder station. I bought a digital (Chinese, cheap) solder station from Marlin P. Jones. Under $50 and it is wonderful. Set it to about 420 Centigrade for the Cardas wire.
Use a decent flux. I apply flux to the ends of the wire, then using the same Kester solder, but in wire form, heat the cable ends to tin them. I clean off the flux/insulation residue with a paper towel. Then I reapply flux (some Radio Shack stuff in a squeeze tube)and re-tin the end of the wire. It comes out nice and shiny. Tinning each end of the wire takes about 1 minute or less.
Here is the solder station link:

This is my solder pot. Do NOT get a lower wattage!
