Finally...Fuseless

I am a safety first guy who doesn't relish spending lots to replace parts I've already bought once. Therefore, suggestions of removing fuses from my Maggies went unheeded.

I just recently switched my KT88 amp from triode to ultralinear mode (I biamp on bass). After listening very loud for several sessions, I haven't blown a fuse. I reasoned , therefore, that when the amp clips, it's not with enough treble energy to blow the tweeter fuses. At ~80WPC it doesn't even blow the midrange fuses.

I built custom crossovers, hanging from the backs of the panels, bypassing all of Magnepan's internal components, but kept fuses when I did. Since I've decided not to increase power any further, I figured removing the fuses was reasonably safe.

I removed the fuse holders and interconnecting wiring completely. The bypass wiring is three parallel runs of Cardas 17.5. I used 8' total of Cardas wire.

The difference was quite dramatic. Detail I never knew was there, upper midrange forwardness that has been missing, but that I've heard in some truly high end speakers, focus, etc. Just wonderful.

The only downsides are hearing edge in some recordings previously veiled makes them a bit less enjoyable.

You guys have been preaching fuseless for quite some time. I'm late to the game here, but to any of you searching for a cheap tweek, here it is. But don't skimp on the wire. The Cardas sounds better than several other wires I tried including single and multiple strands of different sizes of magnet wire. Each additional run of Cardas adds a little body (fullness, power) to the mid/lower midrange.

Now, it's time to rewire the whole speaker!
