The aluminum runs are *very* delicate - clip stats on them and you could tear them. Lifting them only takes a couple of minutes (they aren't soldered, only clamped - one screw removes each one) and avoids the possibility of damage. One could possibly use a pair of stats to sink the heat on the mid/woofer runs, but why mess with it? I'm not sure the heat would damage the runs (although I would worry about the tweeter runs a little), but I'd be a little concerned about the mylar. Perhaps I missed the point of your initial post, but I assumed you were just talking about soldering new wires to the terminals (not directly to the actual runs). I just used WBT silver-laden solder for the task and it worked like a charm. The wires I used are teflon sheathed, silver coated OFC.
