We've both spent years re-engineering our Maggies.
For the curious, I can explain the design of the stock Maggie as follows. Maggies are dipoles - they require a great deal of bass boost to overcome dipole cancellation. In the stock 2-way Maggie, the bass boost is produced through a combination of:
1) The bass panel's natural resonance (+10dB)
2) The bass panel being 6dB more efficient than the QR tweeter
3) The electrical response of the crossover (-3.5dB at 600Hz)
The stock speaker design provides enough boost for subjectively strong bass. This allows Maggies to A/B adequately against conventional speakers.
In my experience, the problem with the stock crossover is the electrical dip in the midrange tends to goof up timbres. Some people find this objectionable; others are perfectly fine with it. It all depends on one's values. The various crossover mods improve upon the midrange, with a corresponding loss of deep bass or treble or both.
It is important to note that the Maggie is not designed for flat acoustic response. It would sound terrible if it were! That's where the subjectivity comes in - what is the "best" downward sloping frequency response? I think that is as much a matter of taste as it is engineering.
