there are three factors

Compare the measured frequency response of the MG1.6 and MG3.6 in the Stereophile reviews.

The MG1.6 bass panel resonance frequency is ~72Hz whereas the MG3.6 is ~48Hz. The larger MG3.6 panel, in addition to being able to move more air, has a lower resonance frequency. The lower resonance frequency enables the larger Maggie to go deeper in the bass, while the larger surface area enables it to produce more decibels without running out of excursion. In these two aspects, Maggies are no different from cone speakers.

A third aspect which is different between Maggies and cone speakers is that Maggies are subject to dipole cancellation. A larger panel reduces the frequency at which dipole cancellation takes effect. Increasing the dimensions of the baffle does the same thing.
