"Inside" the Quad ESL-989's

I'm rebuilding a pair of 989's and thought I'd describe their innards.

As you probably know, they are an "updated" 6 panel version of the venerable '63, with two bass panels added (on the top and bottom) to/of the array and stand close to 5 feet high.

From what I can tell they are electrically identical to the '63 and use the exact same panels. The major "structural" change is in the grille construction which now incorporates two vertical, folded strengthening "wrinkles"; eliminating the need for the two separate vertical metal extrusions in the front and back of the '63's which keep the original metal grilles "bowed out". The new "wrinkled" grilles are thicker than the old with many, small circular holes and are also secured to the top and bottom (plastic?) plates by a number of small self-tapping screws.

Apart from "updated" cosmetics, the only other change I observe is that the voltage multiplier and protection circuits are now contained on a single PC board. The circuitry appears to be the same as in the latest monitor but I did not trace it out nor try and get a schematic. Also don't know if the power and audio stepup transformers have been "beefed up".

Charles
