Hello MDL !
I have extensive experience with single driver speakers from the 80's, Jordan Modules, and it wasn't good.
However, I have never tried Lowthers, Fostex, etc.
I did have speakers i built using 6 strathern ribbons per side in a 3 2 1 configuration from the bottom up, in huge curved baffles.
Julius Sisknius from Audire modded the ribbon drivers so they went down low, and I ran em full range w/o any crossover.
They were in Speaker Builder Magazine.
I appreciate what a crosover can do!
Whats so "special" about the Von Schweikert Vortex Screens ?
Well, everything, imaging, musicality, detail w/o brightness and a large wave launch because of the wide baffle!
The wide baffle "supports" the mids so they can be placed well out into a room for almost astounding depth in the image!
Plus, when called on to do it, they will rock, and I mean rock.
