i couldn't agree more with you on setting levels by ear. insruments such as etf5 are great tools for checking to see that you are set up properly. for example the low frequency tests help you position your speakers and listening position for the most even bass response. without this tool it can be a very long unproductive process. without even bass response you will be adjusting levels constantly according to the content being listened to.
another example is the impulse response measurement. this will show you at what point in time you have an early reflection. by measuring that time and dividing by the speed of sound (1ms=1.08ft) one can narrow his search for the reflection point (a mirror works good too) then confirm his findings by treating the reflection and retesting. this is important to acheive even treble response. the early reflection will comb filter the mids and highs at variable frequencies according to the content being listened to. this leads to the same constant level adjusting for different selections. once these problems are minimized the adjustments are simple and infrequent.
