Re: Maggie IIIa 3-way Active Crossover Project (long)

I totally agree with you on most points. But I still maintain "pinking" is the best way to determine levels. It is true as you said pink noise is "equal energy per octave". It is also true that it may as you said "play at a lower relative sound level". But if you can set the entire speaker to play flat, you will be close to perfection. I think this is what speaker manufacturers strive for. IMHO. In my case, the opposite was true. Setting by pinking actually gave me more "upper end" sound levels. In trying to set up to flat (work in progress), the closer I get, the better it sounds. Again, IMHO. I'm now curious to measure response levels using the stock crossover, and with time, I'll do just that. But to tell you honestly, I am pretty sure what I will find. The simple fact that I now like what I am hearing as compared to what I used to hear with the stock crossover will pretty much answer the question by itself. Although I have only had my crossover for a few weeks, I continue to marvel at the sound improvement. Definitely without doubt, better than before the crossover. I'm also quite sure you feel the same, otherwise you wouldnt be doing this right? As far as the levels are concerned, you have the ability to tweak to your hearts content. In fact more now than ever with the crossover. My point is that Magnepan designed these speakers with all of this in mind. THEY chose how much wire to use for the bass panel, mid panel, and how long to make the ribbon. They also chose the electronics for the crossover. The design took into consideration that most would feed the speaker using only one amp, but left an option to bi-amp using the XO-1. My contention is that it was designed to play as flat as possible using only one amp. The best way that I know to figure out how to set amp levels is to pink, measure using an analyzer (realtime), then set the amp gain accordingly to as flat a response as possible. If anyone out there has a better way, I'd love to hear it.
Cheers,
Andy
