Thanks for the response thus far guys . Several have asked about the amps i use. I am using Wavac 833 monos. I do not think they are the sources ofthe problem as they drive the Quads right up to the shut off point. I believe it is simply a matter of overloading the Quads on dynamic bass transients such as always happens on several of the 1/2 speed mastered records from Sheffield and EMI. I guess I like playing them fairly loud but not overly so. Set up in an Ambiophonic configutration they cast such a palapable image with low distortion that I keep trying to obtain truly realistic SPL.
I believe I mainly neeed to relieve them of the low bass strain on the demanding passages. I just hate the thought of crossing over as it introduces more electronics, potetnital phase shifts etc,etc.
I wold also contemplate using a set of Maggie IVa bass panels as they would proabaly be a good match for the speed of the Quads. They would still miss aot of info below 30 Hz or so but that might not be so bad.
