Re: crossovers/Quads/subwoofers

I've been running my 63 USA Monitors full range, with a Parts Express Titanic kit sub brought in to add some weight. I've been happy, but I don't live in a large apartment, and I sit fairly nearfield (maybe seven feet from the speakers.) At some point I will get a couple capicitors and some rca jacks and try crossing out the extreme lows from the subs. See posts here about this. Some folks have said you must go dipole if you are to cross the highs out of the Quads. You could make your own DIY dipole cabinet, or buy used Gradients and skip the cheap Gradient crossover.

Others have said that the Quads loose their magic one they are not run fullrange, while others say they sound better with the extreme lows removed. I have not tried that route yet, maybe someday. I seem to read a bit about the 989 running out of steam, and I wonder if my 63 USA Monitors can take more before shutting off, I've never tripped the protection, and I can (but don't ) turn them up to uncomfortable (for me) levels. But...what amp are you using? I'm using a 100 watt/channel Music Reference RM9 tube amp, an amp designed using electrostatics (Beveridges, I believe). Maybe your amp is running out of steam. Watts are not always the issue, it's if an amp can handle the needs of an ESL or not. High current and ability to deal with a load of capicitance are most important. One of the reasons it seems to be easier to match a 63 with a decent push/pull tube or OTL amp than some solid state designs.
