Re: Tube amps too slow for electrostatic speakers or not?

For the past five years I have used Wolcotts to drive Crosby modified Quad 63's with Entec LF-40's. First the older version, then with the new transformers. Several observations, 1) speakerwire is critical with the Wolcotts, the Nordost Valhalla seems to improve dynamics, speed and extensionat the top. I assume the same may be true of your HMS cables. 2) The amps benefits from a good isolation bass or at least the use of cones. Placement is tricky as the bottom plate is very thin and the weight is asymmetrical. 3) The amps are also sensitive to power cords although not to an undue degree. 4) Last and most critical, the tubes that Hank provides are barely adequate. Start with the small signal tubes and substitute NOS. Contact me if you want suggestions. The 6922's are easy to find, the other tubes much more difficult. Lastly, replace the stock EL34's, preferably with Mullards from the 60's or 70's. 5) Each of the amps has a large numbers of press fit internal connections. I had Hank hardwire each of these and the improvement was audible.

I guess the moral of this story is that I originally thought that the Wolcotts were slow and a bit soft at the top (bass was always pretty good) but after the changes, I no longer think so.
