Re: Tube amps too slow for electrostatic speakers or not?

OOPS! I didn't see that you started a new thread!

I'll admit it...I love fast amps, especially with electrostatic speakers and Goldmund are the fastest! Even though I don't own a Goldmund, I wish I did! I borrowed a Goldmund 29er for a few weeks and have to say it was incredible! Highs, mids and bass...smoother, but more dynamic? Tighter but more open? These feelings could contradict each other, but it it truly the feeling with Goldmund...real music. They were better than any Threshold, Levinson or Krell that I have ever heard! By the way, Levinson was the worst for me, as they seemed a bit dark, not so dynamic (a bit boring???). The Brystons seemed to offer the best bang for the buck or the SR Goldmund (babies) you would think they're toys until you hear them! They're small, but serious amps!
My knowledge of tube amps is rather limited, hearing many different types at the CES, but not seriuosly listening to them...how much serious listening can you do in a hotel room with thousands of people running around! I have heard the ML CLS with Cary tube amps and the ML Statement E2 with VTL (with Krell on the woofers). Both were warm and juicy. The mids were excellent, but the highs were the problem for me, cymbals just did not sound right to me. Even on the Sheffield Labs Drum and Track disk, I could not be convinced that Ron Tutt and Jim Keltner (track 5&6) were playing in front of me. It's really not a fair comparison, the room, speakers and other electronics were different from mine, I guess I'll need to borrow the VTL for my system and let you know what I find.

Solid State does an excellent job for my ears. Another excellent combination for the ML Prodigy, would be the PASS amps (since Threshold no longer exists, and the Pass X series sound simular but better or the Aleph if you like a bit more warmth) and Spectral (another speed demon), as well as the previously mentioned amps.

All the info. above is my opinion, feel free to drop me a line if you want to share your experience.

Good Luck!
