Home Planar Speaker Asylum

Welcome! Need support, you got it. Or share your ideas and experiences.

I chickened out! Why, it is easy!!

These speakers are built pretty tough. The issues stated so far are about solder blobs burning the Mylar and the tweeters being connected and not wanting to move. Since getting the staples out is the hardest part of rebuilding the speakers and that is done, there is no reason not to continue to the end.

Since we need s step-by-step, use Magneplanar's own instruction sheet for tweeter replacement.
1) protective strip
2) lay speaker down
3) remove strip and pry away end covers
4) disconnect wire at each end (solder or clip, I have speakers with each)
5) reinstall protective strip
6) remove screws and remove tweeter
7) install new tweeter with serial number at the bottom
8) inserts screws Tighten snug and the BACK OFF 1/2-TURN
9) remove covers and install wiring
10) install end covers
11) install protective strips
12) reposition speakers in listening area and remove protective strips.

That is the tweeters, we still have the socks on the speaker so once the tweeter is removed in step 6, start 'lifting the skirt' of the socks. The double stick tape at the tweeter will slow this down but carefully peel the cloth from the speaker frame. Continue until the sock is off the speaker.

Inspect and reglue any loose wires. you can now reinstall the tweeters and audition the speakers to verify no loose wires or reinstall the socks and return the speakers to the way they were.

The installation of the sock on the double stick tape is the hardest part of putting them back together. This is slow getting the sock lined up and stuck down to the tape. This part is NOT CRITICAL as long as the sock is close. The edges of the tweeter cover the inaccuracy of installing the sock. The issue here is holes covered with fabric. If this happens, you need to poke an opening so the screw does not catch the fabric and begin to twist it, an issue that will be visible if you tighten enough for the fold to go beyond the edge of the tweeter.

This stuff is simple mechanical work with that bit of soldering thrown in for extra credit. If you are not comfortable with this procedure, just send the speakers to Magnepan (in the correct box supplied by Magnepan if needed) and have them completely rebuilt to new.

As for soldering the tweeters, plenty of room to avoid blobbing the Mylar. If you soldering skill level will spill solder onto the Mylar, let someone else do this part and any other soldering you are going to do except maybe plumbing which can be pretty messy.

Jump in there, this stuff is easy but always have the tweeter protection strips on the tweeters unless you are listening or have to have them removed to work in the covered area.
