I'll have to experiment with the IVa's. I remember getting killer bass from the 1-D's with a lot of slam, but it's now been several years and my memories are fading. The wave launch theory is an interesting one, there would certainly be more of a front-back pressure differential with a point source though I'm not sure whether the R^2:1/R magnitude difference would be sufficient to account for the effect.

How about time smear as another possible explanation? The Maggies use distributed resonance to compensate for dipole cancellation, and while this should integrate to a relatively flat magnitude response the energy is smeared over several cycles.
