I had a pair of Altec Voice of the Theater's back in the 1970's, and they're similar to khorn's in their rendition of bass. They had tight and realistic bass, not like Cerwin Vega's and some of the others with boosted bass. Even then I ran everything flat and you could feel the bass.
I too run my subs for realistic bass and use a test cd to set my system up. Yes, the recording industry has fallen in love with powerful bass, which is fine if not wooly or boomy.
The terms "Slam" & "Chest Thump" are misnomers for the most part. I think they're used to indicate the energy or presence of weight. Nevertheless, there are times when you can literally feel the music.
I get some slam and feel the weight or energy of the music, both from my subs and panels. Do I feel it thumping me, no, not literally.
Maybe a universal set up terms would eliminate the miscommunication exhibited here.
