RE: Maggies and 'chest thump'

We're talking excessive and dangerous SPL's here, which is probably why you don't hear that at a dealer's. The sound doesn't have to be distorted (beyond the 9% harmonic distortion that's typical of maxed-out woofers, anyway). A very big sub won't distort at those levels, and neither do big studio monitors. That only makes it more hazardous, because the onset of distortion is generally a sign to turn things down. Systems that can reproduce high levels cleanly are risky for that reason, but few home systems do much above 115 dB.
