RE: Maggies and 'chest thump'

Again, go out an get Al DiMiola's, Kiss My Axe and you will understand, Listen to the soundtrack for 2001 A Space Odyssey, Also Sprach Zarathustra, or say Dennis Chambers or Billy Cobham on drums and you will understand.

I also do understand that all of these recordings have been 'doctored' during the mix down/mastering stage. Many frequencies get a boost, or get partially scooped out as part of the regular sound engineer procedure to hype up the recording. What we get in the end is something that doesn't even remotely sound like a real band playing. I've been there, I saw it happen many times over, and to be honestly perfect, I'm not all that big on hyping it up.

Even when I'm recording in my home studio, I am very careful how I go about positioning the instruments/microphones. I play electric bass guitar, and I can get unbearably boomy bass if I shove my bass amp into the corner of the room. That sound is right down ugly, so I always make sure to push the bass amp all the way into the room, to avoid boominess and the unnatural thumping.

Same goes for drums, even for electric guitar. Avoid standing waves, avoid boomy colored sound.

Of course, innovative sound engineers/producers then go in and dick around with the knobs and dirty up/hype up the natural sound, and then 'educate' the listeners as to how should a band 'really' sound.
