The right goal is to have a system that produces great fidelity to the great recordings, and has the option of euphonizing the bad ones.
There are four types of bad recordings
1. Mush. badly placed mics and bad equipment. Can't solve that one.
2. Noisy recordings. Noisy with pronounced hiss and extraneous electronic artifacts. An expander can help if you have a tape loop.
3. Compressed recording. Again an expander can help a lot.
4. Hard sharp or spaceless recording. A tube buffer (e.g. Eastern electric BBE) with a euphonic tube can be used here. An equalizer may help as well, particularly between digital source and DAC.
