I'll be getting a pair of these later this year. Ahem... the speakers, that is.By the way, folks, the lucky guy you see in Travis's link is Mark Gilmore, webmaster of the Atma-Sphere Owner's Group as well as of the Sound Lab Owner's Group. Mark has been working on this project for some time now, mostly in secret. Nope, Linda O'Neil isn't really his technical assistant.
Innovations his planar brings to the table include an extremely thin (3 mil) diaphragm made of Kapton; claimed bass extension to below 20 Hz; easy 8-ohm load; 92 dB efficiency (you can drive 'em with Atma-Sphere M-60's, or so I've been told); and maximum output level in the mid to upper 120's region. Most of these specifications aren't detailed at the website so I hope it's okay that I post them here for inquiring minds. Hey, if these speakers can do all that (or even half that) and sound great too then maybe one day Mark can afford to take Linda out on a real date!
As one who has long fantasized about introducing my own loudspeaker design, I tip my virtual hat to Mark and his associates for boldly pushing beyond the edge of the envelope. All the pieces are in place for the Gilmores to take planars well into new territory in several areas.
