I just had an eye opening 57 experience. I have had 63's for about 20 years, but never got around to hearing 57's. I bought a pair and love them. And like someone else mentioned, you can listen to them near field and they sound great. The ones I bought are in exceptional condition, it was a friend that told me about them in an unexpected phone call, "there are some 57's for sale 30 minutes from you, one of us should buy them". I brought the ad up and bought them immediately. Now I like them so much I decided to find some for my friend. I found them out of town, they looked great, complete rebuild, but didn't have the mid range magic of 57's. That got me interested in understanding how 57's age, so I found a basket case pair at an audio store, bought them sight unseen and had them shipped to me. Turned out they were serial numbers 596 and 600 (1958), took off the grills vacuumed them and plugged them in for 72 hours. They had never been touched. One bass panel had a ripped dust screen which is a simple fix, the rest looked surprisingly good and they sound fantastic.
So my conclusion is basically that the 57's hold up very well, much better than 63's. Second, go out or your way to hear some if you haven't. I could kick myself for not doing it sooner.
