Hey Doug,
Thanks for thinking more about this.
It seems to me that you are primarily deadening the inherent vibrations of the Perforated Pole piece. As it enters the framework it would also make it vibrate. The additional strips of Dynamat serve to lessen the influence of the Pole Piece as an "unintentional metallic driver". With all the energy from the Mylar moving about it, the metal sheet will no doubt contribute to the overall vibrations as it has less mass and could be caused to be disturbed more easily than the frame. I would think that the influence of the air being forced through the holes on the whole of the Pole Piece also would contribute. I can definitely see how the Dynamat would squelch the unnecessary contribution of resonance/noise.
YES I think that is exactly what is happening. The amount of resolution is staggering and I am really surprised at the effect of the "unintentional metallic driver" has. It REALLY screws things up and the cool part is just how good them can sound with a bit of work.
Looking more closely at the diagram of the internal speaker, I'd change my opinion on my comment about the segmenting of the driver. I'm convinced now the effect is ultimately one of stilling the Pole Piece, and also the frame.
Ok I can agree with that.
Where to stop in the process is a good question, and also a very subjective one according to listener preference. I guess if the stuff comes off without too much hassle I'd keep going. If you have seen a good result thus far, then my guess is that finishing it would be the ultimate in eliminating the influence of the perforated thin metal sheet. I would think there to be a cumulative effect in regard to the addition of Dynamat, similar to a box speaker having increased thickness/rigidity in its walls. Whether to space out the strips is another question, but I'm guessing the overall quantity would be as critical as anything.
Yeah I agree. I pulled of a strip today on the pole piece and it came right off with no problems after being there for a week. The pieces on the frame are tougher but I am confident I can remove them. I plan to do just that and start over with different materials. And it sure does seem like you are right about the cumulative effects. Time will tell.
Yeah, conceptually it looks like a very good move on your part
Well that remains to be seen 100% but the results are speaking for themselves. That strip I mentioned removing today, I put it right back!!
As for the setup. I will be the first to admit that my setup is not textbook at all. But it is something you just have to hear. It doesnt sound like headphones and the room is small, so it actually tracks to what the positioning would be if the performers were in the room. And the speakers disappear anyhow...especially now. So far anyone who has heard my setup has not mentioned changing speaker placement. Which given how radical they are and how audiophiles can be that tells me that is pretty good. The great thing about they dynamat tweak is that the stage is deeper and that allows me to move the speaker back a bit so it sounds like the 5-6th row vs the 1st row I had before.
If you send me some 3.6s then I will experiment on them for you :)
