Further Cogitation on the Matter...

It seems to me that you are primarily deadening the inherent vibrations of the Perforated Pole piece. As it enters the framework it would also make it vibrate. The additional strips of Dynamat serve to lessen the influence of the Pole Piece as an "unintentional metallic driver". With all the energy from the Mylar moving about it, the metal sheet will no doubt contribute to the overall vibrations as it has less mass and could be caused to be disturbed more easily than the frame. I would think that the influence of the air being forced through the holes on the whole of the Pole Piece also would contribute. I can definitely see how the Dynamat would squelch the unnecessary contribution of resonance/noise.

Looking more closely at the diagram of the internal speaker, I'd change my opinion on my comment about the segmenting of the driver. I'm convinced now the effect is ultimately one of stilling the Pole Piece, and also the frame.

Where to stop in the process is a good question, and also a very subjective one according to listener preference. I guess if the stuff comes off without too much hassle I'd keep going. If you have seen a good result thus far, then my guess is that finishing it would be the ultimate in eliminating the influence of the perforated thin metal sheet. I would think there to be a cumulative effect in regard to the addition of Dynamat, similar to a box speaker having increased thickness/rigidity in its walls. Whether to space out the strips is another question, but I'm guessing the overall quantity would be as critical as anything.

Yeah, conceptually it looks like a very good move on your part.

Different strokes for different folks in terms of placement...Here's my philosophy regarding placement of panel speakers. I always toe in my panel speakers as I don't like the loss of detail when they are splayed from the listening position since they are quite directional. If the tweeter sounds too hot, then there's an equipment/system matching problem.

I have a pair of Eminent Technology LFT-VI speakers in my office, and they are parallel to the head wall, but only about 5' apart from each other; not too many placement options.

In my listening room the soundstage seems to my ear abnormally wide when speakers are placed further apart and are parallel to the head wall. The sound approaches "headphone" L/R effect when they are spread too wide, at least to my perception. I prefer the experience of the sound being as in front of a stage, versus sound encroaching perpendicularly from L/R. Such placement also increases the possibility of reflections from the side walls. (I was most pleased with the improvement of the sound of the King speakers when I took their large grills and placed them to the forward and side of the speakers along the wall; even with the speakers toed in the influence of the reflections was mitigated, sharpening the perception of the performance being onstage) I also feel the phantom image in the center is spread too widely when the speakers are not toed in. The nature of the panel speaker provides plenty of width to the soundstage for me.

If you are familiar with the frame of the Eminent Technology speakers, it is quite robust, a heavy metal frame weighing about 100 lbs! They also have an "anti-sway" bar support at the bottom in the rear. Of course, with the flimsy pencil thin legs supplied, such a bar becomes necessary. I would think Dynamat to have far less influence in stopping vibrations on that speaker. Besides, to obtain the quantity of material necessary to do both the speakers might cost more than the speakers!

I'm not sure I'd buy a pair of 3.6's to conduct such experiments; you'd better do it for me. :)
