RE: Series vs Parallel XO & Maggie Physics.

I wholeheartedly agree with your observations and am an enthusiastic devotee to active ampllification. Nothing that I have tried has done more for getting out of the way of the music than that has. Subjectively it really did sound as though the amplifiers had gotten hold of the drivers for the first time. And it is next to impossible to implement a 4 pole passive speaker level crossover... that anyone would want to listen to.

I'm very much intrigued by what a digital crossover has to offer and think that I will have to give it a try at some point. If I had it to do over I would have bought one of the Beringers to experiment with. It isn't that I am not happy with the Marchand that I built. I knew that a 24 db Linkwitz Riley has a lot to offer and gets a lot of things right on paper. But it isn't FIR or IIR either. I don't quite understand floating point processing either but to hear some of the pro electronics people talk about it it appears to merrit finding out.

Apparently the rub with a digital crossover is that the firmware that supports the processing is half of the system involved. The way that I understand it is that it has to calculate the phase angles of the signal at each sample. The subtration is easy but getting the phase angle calculations right, on the fly, is tricky because it is based on on what it saw before the new sample. I am told that the artifacts are a little odd sounding when it glitches. For all I know, though, it may not be much of a problem anymore.
