I've often asked myself why does Krell manufacture 150 LB monsters with impressive looking cooling fins? Do these amps really need 150LB cast iron heat sinks for them to run cool?Wouldn't a fan make more sense? A fan would be a more intelligent design.
Pro amps put out 1000w/ch and weigh less than 50LB because a fan is used for cooling instead of 150 LB of cast iron heat sinks with cool looking fins. I'm sure for $15K Krell could design a silent fan.
The reason is marketing. Weight impresses the audiophile consumer. It's a boasting point! The cool looking fins also impresses the audiophile consumer. A 150LB amp with cool looking heat sink fins looks impressive sitting on your floor.
It's all about marketing; about making am impression on the impressionable consumer. Thinking people should be skeptical....VERY skeptical!
