Well here's another round of exploration. I got home late from the hospital last night and tired as I was, decided to test Downrazor's MAGNET WIRE suggestion.
I peeled the ends of four 7ft long strands of the green 26GA wire. As I soldered the incredibly thin things to terminals, I felt Super foolish. The thought that I was falling for some kind of prank played on new forum members hit me strongly for a couple of minutes. C'mon kid, all good speaker cables are thick...even some bad ones! How could you fall for this? But it was Dawnrazor who proposed it and I figured he was serious.
So, as the muscular-looking Monster XP cables drew loops of mocking laughter at me, I yanked them out and replaced them with these green dental-flosslish strings.
Turned on things, nothing burned. Sound did come out. Good sound! BETTER sound in some ways. Impossible, I must be hallucinating!
In fact, I was extremely tired by then (about 2AM). So, the only things I am pretty sure of until further testing are:
-- even one strand works (I may try 2 tonight)
-- imaging shifted from side to side, seemingly with frequency changes. Having paid no mind to where the wires fell behind the equipment, their unshielded nature may be exposing them to the surrounding fields. Or perhaps I did a lousy soldering job.
-- In some orchestral recordings, a clear, almost disturbing (initially), widening of frontal SPACE, not necessarily stage or image. From left of the left speaker to right of the right speaker and above it all, space framed the music. I can't remember which, but one recording had this almost palpable air extending to my sides. Sound almost "bounced back" from this added ambiance.
-- There were other good and bad things that I need to verify or eliminate but the bottom line is that I'll pursue this thing further. Also, I am curious about other people's experiences.
