It's a great first step. The fuses themselves probably aren't as bad as the holders. MMGs are actually diamonds in the rough. They respond quite well to tweaking, and you'll be amazed at how good they can be. As others have said, placement is a key issue. The benefits of treating the room also cannot be underestimated - just don't get carried away and kill the room. This is an area where I need to do more, and I'm working on a couple permanent solutions (but I'm a bit slow).
If you are 'afflicted' with the DIY spirit, then you couldn't ask for a better speaker - IMO. Being so inexpensive, one needn't fear unltimate destruction too much, and as you pile tweak upon tweak they just keep getting better!
There are lots of possibilities with regard to crossover upgrades, and this is likely the best place to start. I can only speak about the two I've tried - the 1st generation and the SMG style. Both made fairly dramatic changes in the voicing of the speaker. I liked the 1st gen XO, but I'm in love with the SMG style - really brought out the midrange and tamed the treble. It's truly remarkable how many different XO designs work with MMGs.
Rod brought up an interesting idea recently - hardwood frames with Mye stands. As a non-woodworker, I think the concept is brilliant. You could start with the Mye stands which will make a dramatic improvement (haven't ever read a negative comment). Then you could build (or have built) a pair of face frames to replace the MDF and attach the Mye stands to them. This not only simplifies a few parts of the project, but also permits doing it in stages - as funds are available. I could be wrong, but I don't see a down side to doing this either.
All I can really suggest is that you have fun! For the price, MMGs are downright incredible speakers, but you can make them better. I had a blast working with mine (I built hybrids) - almost sad that I'm done (until I sit down and listen, that is ;^ )
BTW I hear you on this one: "Music school and a conservatory year didn't make me a musician but sure did a number on mismatching my ears with my budget."
Welcome to the fold!
